From
East to West: "Quaker Farmer" Chinese Export Porcelain in Americaexamined the opening of the China Trade with America in 1785,
the production and shipment of export porcelain for the Western
market, and the commission of specialty porcelain services for wealthy
clients in early nineteenth century Philadelphia. Mary Hollingsworth
Morris, a prominent Philadelphia Quaker, designed and commissioned the
"Quaker Farmer" service for use at Greenhill Farm, the Morris family
farm located outside Philadelphia. In this full-color companion
catalogue, Museum Curator Brian J. Lang presents groundbreaking
research and compelling new information regarding the origin of the
"Quaker Farmer" pattern, Quaker consumerism, and early nineteenth
century material culture. (58 pages, full-color; soft cover, $15)
