The Victorian mansion was built
in 1872 by Alexander Ramsey, who was appointed governor of the Minnesota
Territory 1849-1853 and was elected governor of the State of Minnesota,
1860-1863.
The fifteen-room house of French
Second Empire style remained in the Ramsey family for three generations.
The original black walnut furniture, hand-grained woodwork, marble fireplace,
crystal chandeliers, china and silver, even a granddaughter's dollhouse
were carefully preserved. The house was deeded to the Minnesota Historical
Society in 1964 by the last surviving member of the family.
Governor Ramsey's daughter and two
granddaughters were members of The National Society of The Colonial Dames
of America in Minnesota. In compliance with the will of Miss Anna
Ramsey Furness, the governing board for the Alexander Ramsey House must
consist of five persons, three of whom are to be NSCDA members. The
endowment provided for upkeep of the mansion is augmented by support funds
from the Minnesota Historical Society.
In April, the house is reserved
for school children. Docents in period dress explain the life and
history of the period. The restored kitchen where baking is demonstrated
delights the children.
