The Mandel Post Office is a cabin made from the logs which
were originally used to construct the first structure in Sheridan in 1878.
It is now Sheridan's oldest building. The sod-covered roof is typical
of that time.
Known as the Mandel Post Office, it also served as a store,
residence and voting place at the same time. Later, a lawyer set
up his office in a corner of the building as well. In 1885, it became
the first bank.
The cabin now sits on state land at the Trail End Historical
Center. It is owned and maintained by The National Society of The
Colonial Dames of America in the State of Wyoming.
Colonial Dames provide tours for school children upon
request from teachers. It is frequented by third grade students,
who are studying local history. |
