THE 2005 WASHINGTON WORKSHOPS EXPERIENCE

(Excerpts taken from reports of the 2005 participants)

“I didn’t feel as if I was just taking a sightseeing tour of Washington – I really felt as if we were thrown into the mix of the daily happenings in and around the city.”

“I feel I have walked away from this conference with a much greater understanding of and appreciation for our complex national government.”

“My experience with WW was one of extreme personal growth.  Not only did the week give me an entirely different view on the wonderful gift of democracy, but it has challenged me to explore my role within my community and country.”

“The experience was truly unique and life-changing for me.”

“I thought our Model Congress was the highlight of the session…we learned so much about how Congress works and how hard it is to get bills passed.”

“The Washington Workshops staff was GREAT!”

“The Workshops facilitators succeeded in making each day of the seminar an exciting educational experience.”

“The interaction with the other students in the workshop was a learning experience all by itself.  It was wonderful to meet students from across the country.”

“I could never have imagined that so many like minded, friendly, and accomplished teens could exist in the U.S., much less gather in a single place for such an extended period of time…the best part of the seminar was the people that we met.”

“The nation-wide network of friends I gained through the week showed me how diverse our nation truly is by exposing me to new opinions, expressions, cultures, and ideas on my future career and potential.”

“It made me realize that politicians were real people, not just famous names that are always in the news.  WW brought the high realm of politicians into a ground breaking perspective for me, allowing me to see myself working on the Hill in the future.”

“Our speakers spoke of getting “Potomac Fever,” the political bug, and I definitely think I caught it in my stay in Washington.”

“Very simply, this week has been the single most pleasurable and worthwhile week I have ever spent in my short life.”

“I was mesmerized by the opportunity to sit in on Senate sessions and a U.S. Supreme Court hearing with all nine Justices!”

“We heard from a political satirist, a political science professor from the US Naval Academy, the Media Director from the Center for Media and Public Affairs, a Congressman from Georgia, a lobbyist for higher education, the information officer of the Saudi Arabian Embassy, and quite a few other interesting speakers, from all over the political spectrum and many angels of life in the D.C. area.”

“All in all, the week reenergized my interest in history and government through speakers and the Model Congress, introduced me to our nations’ capital with an insider’s perspective, and provided me with an opportunity to get to know other students from all over the country.  It was a fantastic week.”

“I cannot even begin to fully comprehend what an amazing, once in a lifetime occurrence the week was.  Being selected was truly an honor and a gift that I will be forever grateful for.”
