Washington Workshops Reflection
Summer 2009
[A letter from one of the students]

My week spent in Washington D.C. with the Colonial Dames Essay Contest Winners, and Washington Workshops was an invigorating experience, and truly one I will never forget!  I am so grateful for the friendships, the learning experiences, and of course, the memories. Not very many young people receive the opportunity to visit many of our nation’s historic monuments and meet with powerful political figures. Listening to speakers elucidate on the challenges our world faces was also amazing. Model Congress was a demanding yet enlightening activity, and helped me realize the value of teamwork and communication skills.

Honestly, my experience in Washington D.C. was remarkably enjoyable and difficult to improve.  I was perhaps a little shy at first; yet soon after arriving, the friendliness of the students from around the country dispelled any reservations I might have had. I think we all felt special, and a part of a tradition which the NSCDA embodies.  We shared meals, conversations, laughter, and a sense of camaraderie that’s rare. I guess if I had to offer any suggestion, it would be simply this: find a way to make that wonderful, special week last forever!

Thank You to the National Society of Colonial Dames of America!

This letter is shared so that Corporate Societies, teachers and prospective participants may be made more aware of the significance that this experience has on those who participated this year.  Please copy and share.
