About

Around 1922, the Maine Society decided to let the world know that Maine indeed had the right to its claim of being a Colonial State. While the Province of Maine dated back to a 1622 grant, the State of Maine dated only to 1820, the outcome of the famous “Missouri Compromise”. In 1930 following a series of negotiations, a bronze marker was placed on the Maine side of the Piscataqua River proclaiming the ancient heritage.
