About

Capt. James Means (1753-1832) built his home on a triangle of land across the street from the home of Capt. George Tate (1700-1794) and overlooking the site of the mast yard in Portland. Means House remained a private residence until 1996 when the Maine Society purchased Means House to celebrate its Centennial and to be a support arm for the Society as well as for general operations of the Tate House Museum including a gift shop. Today, Means House is available for rental by community groups, businesses or individuals.

Directions

From Portland, follow Route 22 (Congress Street) west, cross the Fore River, turn left onto Waldo Street. Make a sharp right onto Westbrook Street; Means House is immedi-ately on your right. Parking is available.
